What are bio-stimulator injections?
Collagen is a vital protein that maintains skin structure and flexibility, but as we age, its production decreases. Bio-stimulator injections are a cosmetic treatment that triggers the body’s collagen production. Bio-stimulator injections aim to replenish collagen levels, enhancing skin texture, firmness, and a smoother appearance.
What are bio-stimulator injections made from?
Bio-stimulator injections are made of a biodegradable, biocompatible polymer which is TGA approved for skin creases, wrinkles and skin ageing. This same biodegradable, biocompatible polymer has been used for many years in medical devices, such as dissolvable stitches. Bio-stimulating injections are semi-permanent and non-dissolvable but do biodegrade over time.
What do bio-stimulator injections do?
Bio-stimulator injections stimulate the body’s natural collagen production within the dermis’s deep layers. When injected into the skin, the particles act as a “seed” for new collagen production, gradually replacing lost collagen over time. This process leads to smoother, firmer-looking skin.
Where can collagen-stimulating injections be used?
Collagen-stimulating injections can be used on various areas of the face, including the cheeks, temples, jawline, and nasolabial folds. They can also be used on other areas of the body, such as the neck, décolletage, and hands.
Who is a suitable candidate for collagen-stimulating injections?
Collagen-stimulating injections are typically recommended for individuals over the age of 30. Suitable candidates for collagen-stimulating injections include:
- Individuals who have concerns about skin texture, tone, and volume
- In good overall health
- Have realistic expectations for the results
- Are you looking for overall skin rejuvenation
- Not pregnant or breastfeeding
Who is not a suitable candidate for collagen-stimulating injections?
Collagen-stimulating injections may not be suitable for individuals:
- With certain medical conditions, such as autoimmune disorders or bleeding disorders.
- Who have active or recent infections or recent vaccination. These people must wait at least two weeks before treatment.
- Who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Who have permanent implants in the treatment area.
Other contraindications will be discussed during your initial consultation. It is essential to discuss your medical history and any medications you are taking with your healthcare provider before undergoing treatment.
How do I prepare for bio-stimulator injections?
Before undergoing bio-stimulator injections, you may have to avoid taking blood-thinning medications, such as aspirin or ibuprofen, for at least a week before the procedure. You should also avoid alcohol and smoking for several days prior to treatment. Your practitioner will provide you with specific instructions on how to prepare for the procedure, and you should consult your doctor before ceasing any medications.
What can I expect from bio-stimulator treatment?
During the treatment, your practitioner will administer local anaesthetic to numb the treatment area to make the treatment as comfortable as possible. Once numbed, your practitioner will use equipment such as ultrasound and an Accuvein to scan and find any veins and arteries in your treatment area. The practitioner then marks these on the face so they know where to avoid using the needle or cannula. The entire procedure typically takes around 60 to 90 minutes, depending on the area being treated and how many vials are used.
What is the aftercare required for post-bio-stimulator injections?
This may include avoiding strenuous exercise, alcohol and sun exposure. You may apply ice to the treated areas to reduce discomfort, bruising or swelling.
For certain types of bio-stimulators (but not all), it is important to massage the treated area firmly for 5 minutes, five times a day for five days post-procedure. Your practitioner will provide you with instructions on how to do this.
What are the risks and side effects associated with bio-stimulator injections?
Like any medical procedure, there are some risks and side effects associated with bio-stimulator injections. These may include:
- Swelling and bruising: It is common to experience some swelling and bruising at the injection site. The majority should subside within a few days but can last up to 2 weeks.
- Redness and tenderness: The treated area may appear red and tender, which should also improve within a few days.
- Tenderness, discomfort or pain: A mild degree of tenderness and discomfort is expected post-treatment; however, if significant pain occurs, please contact your treating practitioner.
- Nodules: Small lumps or nodules may form under the skin in rare cases. It is essential to firmly massage the area treated for 5 minutes, five times a day for five days, to prevent these from occurring.
- Infection: As with any injection, there is a risk of disease. To minimise this risk, choosing a reputable practitioner and following proper aftercare instructions is essential.
- Granuloma: an uncommon risk where the body’s immune system reacts to the bio-stimulators and causes the formation of lumps
- Vascular occlusion: Although rare, the bio-stimulator injections may occlude the arterial supply to the skin, soft tissues or the eyes, leading to scarring or blindness (extremely rare).
- Asymmetry: Some individuals may experience some asymmetry during recovery due to swelling and bruising or due to asymmetrical injections or responses to the product.
Bio-stimulator injections’ risks and side effects are generally mild and temporary. However, discussing any concerns with a qualified practitioner before treatment is essential.
How many collagen-stimulating injections do I need?
The number of collagen-stimulating injections you need will depend on your age, individual treatment goals, and the treatment area. Your practitioner will develop a customised treatment plan for you based on your specific needs.
What results can I expect from bio-stimulator injections?
Results from treatment vary between individuals. The response depends on the body to produce new collagen in response to the treatment. The full effects may not be visible for several months as the new collagen production takes time to develop and may require further treatment to see more significant results. Furthermore, ongoing treatments may be necessary to prolong or further the effect of the treatment.
Improvements may occur in; skin texture, firmness, and facial volume. However, the degree of the result cannot be predicted in advance.
Bio-stimulator injections vs bio-remodelling injections
Bio-stimulator injections and bio-remodelling injections are both types of collagen-stimulating treatments. The choice between the two treatments will depend on the individual’s specific needs.
Regarding the immediate after-effects, bio-stimulator injections tend to cause more generalised swelling of the treatment area and some associated bruising. Conversely, bio-remodelling injections produce visible lumps in the skin that take, on average, 1 to 2 days to subside but cause less swelling and bruising.
Bio-stimulator injections vs dermal fillers
Although bio-stimulator injections and dermal fillers are injectable cosmetic treatments, they differ considerably. Dermal fillers add volume through the deposition of hyaluronic acid in the face. Whilst this remains in situ, the effects of the dermal filler remain. Conversely, bio-stimulator injections work primarily by stimulating collagen production. Even after the bio-stimulator leaves the face, the effect of the (new) collagen it induces remains.
Dermal fillers, made from hyaluronic acid, a very hydrophilic or water-loving substance, tend to more easily cause face puffiness if too much is injected, unlike bio-stimulators that do not cause this issue.
FAQ
How long do bio-stimulation treatments take?
The time it takes to receive bio-stimulation injections will depend on the areas being treated and the amount required for your treatment. Our clinic typically allows around 60 to 90 minutes for treatment.
Can collagen-stimulating injections be dissolved?
Unlike dermal fillers, which can be dissolved with hyaluronidase, collagen-stimulating injections cannot be reversed.
Are bio-stimulator injections painful?
Distraction techniques, including ice and vibration, can help reduce pain from the treatment. A local anaesthetic may also be administered before your bio-stimulating injections treatment to numb the skin or a particular area. After the treatment, some patients may experience minor bruising, swelling, discomfort or tenderness at the injection site, which usually resolves within a few days.
How long do bio-stimulation injections last?
Results with bio-stimulating injections are seen at 6 to 9 months, and patients may wish to have another treatment in 12 to 18 months. This variation is relative to the area used, individual ageing changes, and skin quality. However, individual results may vary depending on age, lifestyle, and overall health.
Can I combine bio-stimulator injections with other treatments?
Bio-stimulator injections can be combined with other cosmetic treatments, such as anti-wrinkle injections, dermal fillers, IPL facial rejuvenation or laser resurfacing. We recommend using cosmeceutical skin care at home to support collagen stimulation further. Combining treatments can help to achieve more comprehensive and longer-lasting results. Your practitioner can discuss your treatment options and develop a customised treatment plan.
How much are bio-stimulator injections?
Typically, the cost of bio-stimulator injections depends on the amount, and you can view our pricing schedule here.
It is important to note that the cost of bio-stimulator injections should not be the sole factor in choosing a practitioner. The practitioner’s experience, qualifications, and reputation should also be considered when making a decision. Your practitioner will discuss the cost of the treatment during your initial consultation.
