Radiofrequency (RF) Needling
EXION radiofrequency needling is a unique treatment that combines monopolar radiofrequency (RF) with AI-controlled energy delivery and microneedling. This treatment tightens the skin and improves fine lines, wrinkles, thin skin and acne scarring.
What is RF needling?
Radiofrequency needling using EXION Fractional RF improves the skin’s appearance by inducing controlled thermal damage in the deeper layers of the dermis. This is achieved through the use of a unique combination of monopolar radiofrequency, microneedling, and an AI-controlled energy delivery system that delivers the radiofrequency energy deep into the dermis.
Radiofrequency needling can help to:
- Tighten the skin
- Improve fine lines and wrinkles
- Enhance skin elasticity and thinning skin
- Improve the appearance of some acne scars
- Reduce pore size
Skin needling and radiofrequency are both well-established treatments that can be performed individually to restore collagen and improve the skin. The combination of the two in a single treatment enhances their effects on the skin, resulting in quicker, more efficient results compared to using either treatment alone. This synergistic approach means fewer sessions are needed to achieve noticeable improvements.
What is EXION?
EXION Fractional RF is a technology that combines microneedling and RF energy to deliver a unique skin rejuvenation procedure. The EXION Fractional RF device uses Artificial Intelligence to achieve consistent results with a single pass technique. This revolutionary technology provides a more comfortable treatment experience than traditional RF needling treatments and works to correct acne scarring, tighten the skin, and reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
How does RF needling with EXION work?
RF needling combines radiofrequency with microneedling to deliver the RF energy into the dermis for skin rejuvenation. Unlike any other currently available microneedling RF technologies, EXION Fractional RF uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) pulse control, eliminating the need for multiple passes and making the treatment more comfortable in comparison to older RF needling devices. The
AI technology ensures that the required energy is delivered during each pulse, and from each microneedle, based on individual needs of each patient and treatment area.
EXION Fractional RF utilises either insulated or non-insulated microneedles, depending on the requirements of the patient.
- Non-insulated microneedles deliver RF energy to the superficial and deeper layers of the skin
- Insulated microneedles deliver energy only to the deeper layers, bypassing the superficial layer, reducing the risk of hyperpigmentation in darker skin types.
Radiofrequency
Radiofrequency energy is used to generate heat between 60-80 degrees celsius in the dermis of the skin. This causes:
- Old collagen and elastin fibres to shrink and tighten
- The formation of new collagen and elastin fibres to improve the appearance of acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles
- Improved skin elasticity
Skin needling
The delivery of microneedles into the epidermis and dermis causes a controlled wound to the skin, and:
- Creates microchannels in the tissue to which the RF energy is delivered
- Stimulates the release of growth factors
- Encourages new collagen and elastin production
What are the benefits of RF needling?
Radiofrequency needling using EXION Fractional RF is designed to penetrate the deeper layers of the skin for superior results. Some of the benefits of EXION Fractional RF treatment include:
- AI-controlled for precise energy delivery
- Single pass approach avoids excessive micro-injuries and prevents irritation
- Minimally invasive treatment
- Minimal downtime
- Increases collagen and elastin
- Reduces skin texture irregularities
- Smooths and firms the skin
- Reduces appearance of acne scars, wrinkles and fine lines
- Tightens loose or mildly sagging skin
What areas can RF needling treat?
EXION RF microneedling can treat any area of the face and neck as needed. However, the most popular areas targeted for skin rejuvenation are the face, neck, lower face only and acne scars.
Who is a good candidate for RF microneedling?
Radiofrequency needling is suited to the treatment of many skin types, including olive and darker skin types.
Good candidates for RF microneedling are those with:
- Concerns about fine lines and wrinkles
- Large or open pores
- Visible skin texture and irregular skin tone
- Loose or sagging skin
- Acne scars
The treatment is not recommended for those with the following conditions:
- Eczema
- Active acne
- Psoriasis
- Defibrillators
- Pregnancy
- Diabetes
- Tendency for keloid scarring
You should not have taken isotretinoin medication for at least six months before undergoing RF Needling procedures. Additionally, if you’ve had a threads procedure, you should wait six months before receiving RF needling in that area.
A consultation with one of our practitioners will determine whether you are a suitable candidate for the treatment.
How long does EXION RF needling treatment take?
The overall skin rejuvenation process of RF microneedling takes approximately 30-60 minutes to complete. The exact time typically relies on the size of the area and the exact skin condition being treated.
In addition to the treatment duration, you will be requested to arrive earlier for the application of numbing cream prior to your EXION Fractional RF needling treatment.
How to prepare for RF needling treatment
Preparation for RF needling treatment includes discontinuing other skin treatments such as chemical peels for at least four weeks prior to treatment, unless previously approved by your EXION Fractional RF practitioner. Using sunscreen daily, and avoiding excessive sun exposure and fake tan two weeks prior to RF microneedling treatment will reduce the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
You may also be requested to cease using active skin ingredients such as Vitamin A, skin exfoliants and acids for 2-3 days prior to your appointment.
How does EXION RF needling work?
Prior to EXION Fractional RF treatment, a topical anaesthetic cream is applied to minimise any discomfort. A neutral electrode is applied to the skin, usually on your back, as required for the monopolar radiofrequency.
The topical anaesthetic is removed once it has sufficiently numbed the treatment area and the RF needling treatment is then performed and is comfortable in most areas.
At the conclusion of the treatment, the skin will have mild to moderate erythema (redness of the skin) and some mild swelling. These are normal and expected outcomes which settle shortly after treatment and resolve over the following 1–3 days. Pinpoint bleeding may also occur during treatment, but this will be resolved before the conclusion of the appointment.
The skin may feel warm and tight, similar to sunburn and this will resolve within 24 to 48hrs hours post-treatment.
Some patients may experience mild crusting of the skin post-treatment. These will dry on the skin and slowly resolve, which can take up to 2 weeks in some cases. These are not to be picked or scratched off as this may encourage scarring and pigmentary changes.
Our patients are provided with specially curated post-treatment products to use following treatment to help soothe the skin and encourage skin hydration and repair.
How to care for your skin after the EXION treatment
After the RF needling treatment, it is important to continue caring for your skin. It is recommended that you:
- Follow the skincare regime provided by your practitioner
- Use a moisturiser daily, starting 24hrs post treatment, if you feel you need it
- Avoid sun exposure
- Use a broad spectrum sunscreen, ideally SPF50+
- Avoid swimming or strenuous exercise for 24hrs post-treatment
- Delay using makeup for 24-72hrs post-treatment
How long is the downtime for EXION RF needling?
The downtime required following RF needling is quite minimal.
After the treatment, there might be some redness and mild swelling, which subsides within 24 hours. However, some residual redness with sensitivity may last up to 48 hours post-treatment.
Social downtime in most cases in less than 48 hours with a full recovery and normal skin care can resume after 10-14 days.
How many treatments are required?
There can be variation between each individual and the number of sessions they require to achieve their desired results. Generally, we recommend a minimum of 3 EXION RF microneedling sessions based on the individual needs and skin condition.
After your first treatment, you will begin to see the results at the 8 week mark. Positive effects can be seen immediately post-treatment due to the lifting and tightening from the temporary collagen shrinkage, lasting approximately 1 week. The temporary collagen shrinkage is then replaced by collagen tightening associated with the reparative and remodelling phases of wound healing.
From here you will experience continued improvement in the treated area between 3 to 6 months or longer post-treatment. As the natural ageing process continues, we recommend annual maintenance sessions following the conclusion of your initial course of treatment.
The effect of the treatment can last several years, depending on each individual’s collagen regeneration and remodelling time.
What are the risks and side effects of RF needling?
There are few potential risks and side effects associated with RF microneedling. The skin generally tolerates the radiofrequency and microneedles used in the EXION RF microneedling device, but mild redness is to be typically expected during and after treatment.
Other side effects that may be encountered include:
- Pinpoint bleeding
- Slight bruising
- Swelling
- Itching
- Dryness
- Scaling
- A mild acne flare-up
- A cold sore breakout
Generally, these side effects may last a few hours post-procedure or several days. You may need to get in contact with a health professional, however, if you notice the following side effects:
- Fatigue
- Headaches
- Persistent swelling or redness
- Signs of infection
- Allergic reactions
- Prolonged bruising or bleeding
FAQ
What is the difference between laser skin resurfacing and RF needling?
Laser skin resurfacing is viewed as an “outside to inside” treatment. This means that the laser energy must penetrate through all layers of the skin to reach its target. Laser treatments can often cause a change in pigmentation, and may not be suitable for those with darker or olive skin tones.
With RF needling treatment, the skin is treated from the “inside-out”, as the needles penetrate the skin and the energy can be delivered only at the tips of the needles. The radiofrequency is not attracted to melanin or pigment in the skin, therefore the chances of causing pigmentation are low, making it ideal for those with darker or olive skin tones.
What is the difference between microneedling and RF microneedling?
Radiofrequency microneedling and traditional microneedling are both forms of collagen induction therapy designed to lift, tighten, and rejuvenate the skin, and treat acne scars. As the name suggests, radiofrequency microneedling incorporates the delivery of radiofrequency energy into the skin which reduces the time required to see results. Whilst traditional microneedling remains an effective treatment, the EXION Fractional RF provides a superior result.
Some advantages of microneedling with EXION RF over traditional skin needling include:
- Radiofrequency needling treats deeper in the dermis, up to 8mm if using EXION Fractional RF Extended Mode.
- Hybrid treatment combining RF and collagen induction therapy
- AI-controlled energy delivery ensure the appropriate depth and intensity to suit each individual’s requirements
- With both non-insulated or insulated microneedle options, the practitioner is able to tailor the treatment to each patient
How long does microneedling with RF last?
The effect of microneedling with RF can last for years, but this depends on each individual’s collagen regeneration and remodelling time, combined with the number of treatments completed and lifestyle factors.
As each individual will require a different number of sessions to achieve their optimum results, this will affect how long the results will last.
We do recommend a course of 3 EXION Fractional RF treatments, followed by annual maintenance sessions.
How much does RF needling cost?
The cost of EXION RF needling typically depends on factors such as the size of the treatment area, the extent of skin conditions to be treated, and how many sessions are required for optimal results.
A detailed quote will be provided during your initial consultation appointment. You can view our consultation fees here.
Does RF microneedling treatment tighten skin?
Yes, overall skin rejuvenation with EXION RF microneedling treatment can help tighten mild to moderate loose skin. The treatment remodels the skin, which encourages the production of new collagen and elastin which naturally tightens the skin.
Can RF needling be combined with other treatments?
Radiofrequency needling can be combined with a variety of treatments to enhance outcomes. For general skin rejuvenation and anti-ageing concerns, patients undergoing EXION Fractional RF needling may include:
- Wrinkle reducing treatments
- Facial volume loss treatments
- Rejuran
- EMFACE wrinkle reducing and lifting treatment
- EXION Face Hyaluronic Acid boosting treatment
Treatment for acne scarring may also include laser skin resurfacing treatments if the scarring is severe.
Skincare containing quality active ingredients should be used following RF microneedling to assist with collagen production and enhance treatment results. Some products that can be used are vitamin A, vitamin C and hyaluronic acid.
